Thorium and Thorium Compounds to Vitamins, Volume A27, Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 5th Edition

Authors: H. J. Arpe, Stephen Hawkins, William E. Russey, and Barbara Elvers

I have the german version and for sure this is a masterpiece
Ullmann encyclopedia of IC is an excellent chemical guide for any person interested on chemical processes including pharmaceutical and food industries. The version we own is from year 1954 and is in german. Current edition is too expensive for any individual...I wonder how many libraries own a new edition. I am open to any further discussion about this collection...I am thinking on donate it...

This is the greatest encyclopedia of science
I own the 2nd edition (from 1933) of this work, and I still use it almost weekly. I would love to buy the latest version, but cannot afford it.

Alexander and the Great Food Fight

How great to see excellent teaching in form children love
As a grandmother, I am delighted to see this kind of marvelous nutrition information in a form children will love. Hopefully their parents will accidentally learn also.

I see many, many children today who know nothing about what they should eat and why (and don't) but, what is worse, I see too many parents not paying attention to the need for these foods for healthy children. What a travesty!

It is my understanding that health organizations over the country have discovered them and are putting them where mothers come for WIC assistance. Perhaps that will break a pattern of ignorance that will eventually bring benefits to our wonderful country as a whole. Nutrition is vital but unless we know about it we will be the losers.

The excellent artwork, the detail and then the high quality, high gloss paper all come together for the perfect gift for grandparents. I have 11 grandchildren and 4 (going on 5 great grandchildren) and intend to use it to say things I hesitate to say in person.

Army of Hope, Army of Alienation: Culture and Contradiction in the American Army Communities of Cold War Germany
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (30 May, 2001)
Author: John P. Hawkins
Average review score:

Excellent Book for Undergraduate Classes
This is a first-rate ethnography of a little known but important community: forward-deployed American solidiers, stationed in Germany at the height of the Cold War. Hawkins mixes profound structural analysis with intimate conversational portraits, to paint a picture of a military community torn between the competing demands of army life and family responsibilities. I used the text in a large undergraduate class, "Cultural Anthropology." The students liked the book very much, and used it to test and apply the concepts they learned earlier in the semester, e.g., "social structure," "kinship," "marriage," "cultural psychology." All in all, we found it be an excellent teaching tool, not to mention an excellent ethnography. I recommend it highly.

AS/400 Primer : Fundamental Concepts and Training for Programmers, Administrators, and System Operators
Published in Paperback by MC Press, LLC (January, 2000)
Authors: Ernie Malaga, Doug Pence, Ron Hawkins, and Ernie Malagan
Average review score:

I literally owe my career to this book!
I literally owe my career to this book. If there were only one AS/400 sys admin book you could own, this would be the one! Two years ago I was thrown into the fires of AS/400 System administration. This book was the water I needed to put out those fires and become a proactive system administrator. It sits on the corner of my desk and I still reference it all the time. The "Primer" explains the situation in simple enough terms that a beginner will become excited about setting up and working with the AS/400. Then it will take you to the next level so that you can become a proactive administrator rather than a reactive one. I have recommend the "Primer" to friends that are seasoned administrators and they reference it all the time too. I just can't say enough about this book.

Excellent book for the beginner!
This book is an exceptional introduction for the beginner in Buddhism. It covers all the major points in a form that is easily understood. The author clearly has a deep understanding of Buddhism, but has gone to great lengths to write in a style that is accessible to the average person. Highly recommended for those beginning their study of this fascinating religion.

Building the Customer Specific Retail Enterprise
Published in Hardcover by Breezy Heights Publishing (1999)
Authors: Gary Hawkins and Gary E. Hawkins
Average review score:

Implement this book!
This is a fabulous resource for "mining" your best customers.

We have a great customer specific marketing system now with over 80% of our dollars coming from our "preferred customers" who have a card. We are a specialty high end retailer, not a supermarket. We are an independent, with only two stores in our market, and this type of marketing is great for us!

This book can take someone just starting to a new level. The book is heavily about supermarkets, but there are valuable lessons to be learned if you are not a supermarket. For example, we began to mail to our best customers, as this book recommended, and had a good increase in sales.

If you study this book, you can find out which customers bought from you in the past and have dropped off. You can pinpoint the "gold" customers and find ways to reach them.

This book takes customer specific marketing to a new level. The comments and practical resarch in the book are great.

There are many other points that this book brings out. For example, if a Walmart or other very price competitive store comes in your area, what do you do? You don't just depend on the data based marketing procedure you have. We learned this lesson the hard way last Fall, before I read this book.

I highly recommend this book to retailers.

Close Encounters With Antique Furniture: A Restorer's Story
Published in Hardcover by Rhodes & Easton (May, 1998)
Author: David Hawkins
Average review score:

Comments by Deborah Lambert
Deborah Lambert is the Senior Academic Consultant for Christie's Education in London, England.

There are many books on the history of furniture and its styles; there are many important documents that provide information about furniture makers and the periods in which they lived. But however valuable these may be, to me they only tell part of the story. the other part is told by the pieces of furniture themselves. I have been privileged to have had the opportunity, over the last 20 years, to listen to David Hawkins talking about antique furniture and watching him work. Most of what I understand about how period furniture was made I have learnt this way, and questioning and sometimes arguing a point. There is no doubt that David is a masterly restorer, but he is much more than that. One of the most remarkable things about this book is that it is like having David in the room with us. He works and talks, as it were, in front of us making us see, making us think, and telling anecdotes that prove a point or enhance knowledge. He claims there have been many people with similar skills, but despite his protestations I find this quite hard to believe. He mixes practical common sense, and sound commercialism, with an innnate feeling for what is right, he probes and questions, showing all the time a deep respect fot those from whom he learnt his trade, and for those that taught them, and the traditions of the workshop. But perhaps more than anything, he is passionate about it all. The practises and conventions of the workshop that were responsible for the production of all the furniture we now collect, the tradition to which David belongs, no longer exist. By sharing his life time's experience and knowledge he has helped capture it for us and for the future generations. It will I am sure, change the way many of us look at and think about period furniture by opening our eyes, sometimes to the obvious. With or without any practical knowledge, anyone with a serious interest in antique furniture will find this book fascinating.
